There's this song by They Might Be Giants called "Older." While it is highly entertaining, it is actually what I think sometimes. I will be sitting at my desk and suddenly just think "I am an hour older than I was an hour ago...wait-I'm a second older than I was when I started this thought..and now I'm even older than just then! And just then! HOLY COW." In a little over a month I will be 25. A quarter of a century old. And it makes me really happy that this band made a song about my thoughts.

Awesome things I've learned today.

I love learning things about our planet. I am absolutely fascinated by plants and animals and people and other living things. Today, I learned many amazing things, which I feel compelled to share with you because they are simply too great to keep a secret...

The Great Barrier Reef is in danger-we all know this-one of the things threatening its existence is a starfish I believe was called the crown of thorns starfish. They contain hundreds of poisonous spines and are huge and eat coral. And they're hard to kill bc if you cut them, they just regenerate...so if you cut one in half, it becomes two. They have to be physically removed or injected with poison. Usually, they aren't a big problem, bc their eggs don't survive. But fertilizers that run into the ocean provide the perfect nutrients for them, so they increase in large numbers.

If the ocean's temperature raises two degrees-the coral will die. Without coral, the fish will die, and so on. Two little degrees! But the coral can protect itself-and hold on to your pants-because this is the coolest thing I have ever found out. CORAL CAN CHANGE THE WEATHER! It exudes a chemical which floats above the surface and increases cloud production, therefor providing shade and lowering the temperature when it gets too hot. Is your mind BLOWN????

A fun theory I learned today was that people are attracted to each other based on their immune systems. We are attracted to people who have opposite immune systems because if we have kids with them, the kids will be healthier. How can you tell an immune system different from your own??? SMELL. Not something you really notice, but your body does-hence the reason your opinion of attractiveness varies from your friends'. Smell is blind, not love necessarily.

There's a hot spot in the Earth's core around Australia. As Australia has moved over it, it has pushed lava up to form mountain peaks. Australia moves 5 inches a year-making it the world's fastest moving continent.

I felt really inspired after learning these things, and I wanted to share my joy with you. I hope you were equally fascinated. And if you weren't, maybe you should consider posting some of your amazing knowledge to educate the rest of us!

Pumpkinfest

Circleville is a crazy place on pumpkin weekend. Even though I spent 7 hours in a car, 3 of them trapped in traffic with fellow pumpkin lovers, it was worth it. Jen and I tried lots of pumpkin foods-almost all of which were so awesome. Here's what we found:

Pumpkin waffles-not really waffles-shaped like a flower-thin as a potato chip and sweet.
Pumpkin corndogs-corndogs, smeared with pumpkin sauce.
Pumpkin taffy
Pumpkin cream puff
Fried pickles-not pumpkin...but you can't not get them.
Fried caramel apple slices-not even remotely healthy or pumpkin like-but wow.

Obviously, we did not eat any normal pumpkin things like bread or pie or coffee. Really-What would be the point? We also did not eat any suspiciously weird pumpkin foods...like pumpkin burgers or chili. We planned on riding the ferris wheel and didn't want to throw up.

We visited the giant pumpkins, gazed at pumpkin saleables, and made fun of the visiting queens (Queen of Moonshine?? of Coal?? Icecream?). We rode the ferris wheel and halfway to the top realized what a terrifying experience it truly was. I'm not really sure why I thought so-I mean, come on-I jumped out of a plane-but still, I could not wait to get down. Then we watched a parade and laughed some more at the queens and philosophied about why Kentucky only went by county queens...we realized this was probably due to the fact that we would also have ridiculous queen names..."Queen of Horses" "Queen of Tobacco" "Queen of Bourbon." Just a few of our ponderings.

I also learned that the OSU mascot is a buckeye. Oddly enough, did not know this before, but that could be because I don't like Ohio State. I'm sorry if you do. And I'm REALLY sorry you have such a lame mascot. I mean, how exactly, is a BUCKEYE going to defend itself from a wildcat, or other living creature with moving limbs?

Overall-I highly reccommend the Circleville pumpkinfest. It has everything you could want out of fall.

I did it!!!!!!!

I jumped out of an airplane 10,500 feet above the ground!!! And oh my God it was the coolest thing ever. I highly reccomend skydiving here:
www.skydiverichmond.com
(Richmond, Indiana)
Very awesome, laid back, professional skydivers who make the whole experience.

Here's how it went down:

I got there, signed the waiver (which said lots of scary things about death) and went through training. I was going tandem, which means that I would be strapped to an instructor, so the training time was fairly short, about 1/2 an hour. There were a ton of people going today, and I was pretty far down the list so I had to wait awhile. They had cornhole and food and a living room with lots of couches and a television and magazines, so we hung out there for awhile, watching other skydivers and eating the best grilled cheeses ever.

Then suddenly, they called my name. I'm thinking that I have another hour or so before I actually go up, but no. It was "get in the suit, get in the harness, there's the plane, let's go." From the moment I stepped into the plane, I had this feeling of calm like I have never felt before. No worries, just happy peace. We hit our designated altitude, and they open the door. I force my feet through the wind onto the tiny step outside of the plane (which the camera man is already standing on). I get into position, we rock forwards, backwards, and forwards again to fall out of the plane face down, hurtling towards the earth. Still, I am calm. I remember my training, we get into freefall position and for minutes, I am falling through the sky. Oddly, there is no falling sensation. Nothing like going on a rollercoaster. I imagine it's how a bird must feel. Wind rushes against my face, pulling my skin back, and I have to concentrate on breathing, because it's a little difficult when you're that high and it's cold. You can't scream (not that I ever wanted to), because if you breathe through your mouth, your lungs will super expand and you'll have even more trouble breathing. Then, Joe (my instructor) pulled the cord and we float gracefully in the air, observing the perfect view of trees and farmland. He asks if I want to try a spin-Hell Yes. I pull on the left toggle and we spin quickly in the air. We practice stearing and landing, and after about 10 minutes, slide onto the ground. There isn't the flood of relief I expected. I was (and am) just insanely happy. It was great. One of the best experiences ever, and I promise you, there is nothing like it and it is not even close to what you expect. I had the whole thing videotaped and it is so awesome. Friday did a fantastic job and I am going to watch it every day because it is that freakin cool. Let me know if you want see the video, or the awesome pictures Burch took, because I will proudly show them off.

I highly reccomend doing this at some point in your life, if not tomorrow. Well worth the money and time. I can't wait to go again and try Accelerated Free Fall-you get to go by your self, with two instructors by your side, not strapped on. Whoohoo!

Tomorrow at 1:00pm, I will be jumping out of a plane. This was supposed to happen today at 11, but they made me reschedule due to a pilot issue. But now, I'm good to go. I'm jumping in Richmond, IN-tandem jump, which means I'll be hooked to an instructor. I paid for the video, so they'll be taping the whole way down and I will have one kick-ass souvenir.

I am so excited my whole body is vibrating. It's better than butterflies, it's like...I know this sounds gross, but if I have to compare it to bugs...it's those silverfish house centipede things. You know how fast they move when you turn on the light? There's a billion of those running through my vains that fast-it is awesome. I am also overwhelmed with happiness because this is so the coolest, stupidest thing I've ever done.

I am crossing something off my list of lifetime goals!!! I LOVE when I get to do that! You know how great it is when you make a to do list and keep accomplishing things? How good it feels every time you cross something off? This is that feeling times a million, I feel like I am actually, truly living. Not sauntering through life, but really seizing the moment and doing something that I am going to brag about for the rest of my life. I am absolutely positive I will write immediately after I get home tomorrow to let you know how it went.

I AM JUMPING OUT OF A PLANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a really fun, extremely busy weekend. Friday night my brother came home, so on Saturday afternoon we went to Goetta Fest and had fun trying crazy things like goetta donuts, pizza and a goetta way. Then we rushed home and left for Dylan's wedding. It was in Ault Park-really pretty, casual but hot. It was a good time. Got home late, went to bed and woke up early for CANOE 07. It was awesome, except now I have many injuries and I'm very sore in the body area.
***Canoeing next year will be the first weekend in August. So don't plan anything then-you have a year's notice.

Best Day!!! I love H&R block. They totally rock. My taxes were so confusing because I had about 10 different jobs, 2 of which did not take out taxes and hired me as an "independent contractor." My mom could not do them for me, I didn't want to go to jail, so I agreed to shell out the cash and get them done for me. I went in, sat down, she asked questions, I answered, and I get lots of money back for a tax refund!! In about 20 minutes! I thought I would have to pay lots of money, but she actually helped me with all that stuff on the commercial that they say they will do. They did it. AND she told me how to do them on my own next time. Also, if I refer a friend, I get $15...anyone still need to do taxes??

Another good thing-my Dad is awesome. He went back to the doctor, had more tests, and everything cleared up!! He may not even have to have surgery! And he can eat all of his favorite foods again so he's isn't Eeyore anymore, it's awesome.

Yet another good thing-Saturday is ALL DAY THEATRE EVENT!!!! Heading out to the Ohio Thespian Conference where I will be checking out workshops on movement, dance, masks, and fight choreography along with 3 plays. Only a preview for my WEEK LONG THEATRE EVENT this summer!!
